The History

The Star Hotel, built in the 17th Century, is a Grade ll listed building.

Across the years The Star has homed many famous people; in 1848 Charles Dickens visited the hotel gathering material for his book David Copperfield and many of the town’s buildings have their place in the book including the Star, which becomes the Inn where David and Steerforth stayed.

Also, Lord Nelson was a regular guest at the Star Hotel, our bar is name after him in memory and many of the elaborately fixtures and fittings of his room are now an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
